I’m Ellie, founder of Vojo. And I’m very (perhaps too) focused on data privacy.

I use Linux instead of Windows or Mac, DuckDuckGo instead of Google, Thunderbird instead of Gmail, and Firefox instead of Chrome.

I didn’t get a DNA test for years because I didn’t trust other DNA testing companies to look after my data.

So much so, I started Vojo so I could have my DNA tested directly with a lab I trusted and be in control of my own data.

So data security has been at the heart of designing the process at Vojo from the beginning.

What does the lab do with my saliva sample?

Our lab uses your saliva sample to extract your genetic data.

They never get any information about you, so your sample is 100% anonymous to them.

Here’s the process:

  • The lab receives your anonymous sample.
  • They get your DNA data from your saliva.
  • They securely send us your raw genetic file along with the barcode, which we match to the customer ID who registered the barcode.
  • The lab stores your saliva sample and digital genetic data for 2 weeks in case anything goes wrong with the data delivery.
  • Once 2 weeks pass, they destroy the sample and delete the data.

 

Which lab do you work with?

I interviewed lots of labs before choosing Anglia DNA.

They’re a small independent lab based in the UK. So none of your data is crossing borders either (unless you live outside the UK).

Anglia DNA also does forensic analysis for the police in the UK.

But the main thing which sealed the deal for me? The founder called me and personally invited me to visit for a tour of their lab. How nice is that?

What does Vojo do with my data?

We use your “raw” genetic data (that’s the big data file) to look at 1000s of genes related to your health and nutrition needs.

We keep your raw data so we can update your results when new research is released. But you’re in full control of your data. So if you’d like us to delete your data, let us know.

How do I know my genetic information is secure?

We use a fully accredited laboratory in the UK, abide by strict ISO regulations and we’re registered with the ICO, who make sure we have everything in place to look after your health and genetic data properly.

We’ll never use your personal data for anything other than providing you with diet and lifestyle advice without your permission.
